The New Volkswagen Transporter T7: Modern Design Meets Advanced Powertrains

Volkswagen presented the seventh-generation Transporter and Caravelle vehicles, which will join the electrified ID. The Volkswagen Transporter T7 draws heavily on the Ford Transit Custom and offers turbodiesel, plug-in hybrid, and electric powertrains.

Panel vans, panel van Pluses, and double cab dropsides are next-generation LCVs, whereas Kombi and Caravelle are passenger vans. Meanwhile, versions with a high roof and extended wheelbase provide more rear legroom. The VW Transporter and Caravelle match the Ford Transit and Tourneo Custom like clockwork.

For starters, we can see an updated front end, which draws inspiration from the Multivan and ID Buzz. VW-specific features include flat side window beltlines and Amarok-style LED taillights with body-colored accents. Meanwhile, the digital cockpit boasts a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, a 13-inch infotainment system, and, of course, lots of storage.

Matching fenders, side moldings, and 19-inch Indianapolis alloy wheels distinguish the latter from unpainted bumpers. Inside, there are unique seat materials embroidered with the PanAmericana logo, lit stainless steel inlays on the side steps, and high-gloss black decorations. Volkswagen also says the T7 has "more space, payload, towing capacity, and efficiency" than its predecessor.

The new Transporter has a 3,100 mm (122 inches) or 3,500 mm (137.8 inches) wheelbase and a length of 5,050 to 5,450 mm (198.8 to 214.6 inches). Due to its length and breadth, it can carry 5.8–9.0 cubic meters (204.8–317.8 cubic feet), more than its predecessor. The towing capacity may reach 2.8 metric tons (6,173 pounds), and the maximum payload is 1.33 metric tons (2.932 pounds), depending on variation. The van has three all-electrics, one 2.5-liter plug-in hybrid, and three turbodiesels.

Power varies from 108 hp for the weakest diesel to 282 hp for the greatest electric. All-wheel drive is standard on ICE cars but optional on diesel models. In contrast, electric cars are RWD, with AWD versions coming shortly.

The standard diesel panel van Volkswagen Transporter T7 costs €36,780 ($39,654) before VAT and €43,768.20 ($47,188) after VAT in Germany. The passenger-focused Caravelle's pricing is unknown.
