The New 2024 Toyota Hilux Will Include A Hybrid Version

The Toyota Hilux will launch a mild hybrid variant in 2024 with the goal of improving performance as well as its off-road and load-carrying capabilities. The Hilux's 2.8-liter, four-cylinder diesel engine is equipped with a belt-integrated starter generator as part of the new powertrain version.

Meanwhile, a 48V battery under the back seat provides the engine's electricity. The battery, which weighs only 7.6 kg, charges during braking and deceleration, improving total efficiency.

Likewise, the upcoming Toyota Land Cruiser is anticipated to include this hybrid configuration as an option. When accelerating, the system may provide an extra 16 horsepower and 48 pound-feet of torque, which is expected to result in a 5% increase in efficiency over the non-electrified diesel engine. The upgraded stop-start system, which prolongs engine off-time at a standstill, further improves efficiency.

Although the performance numbers are unknown, Toyota promises a quieter start-up and quicker throttle responses for a more comfortable drive in traffic. These updates significantly enhances the Hilux's off-road capability. For instance, the electrical assistance system provides smoother acceleration on rough terrain, while the regenerative braking system improves stability on steep descents.

The maximum payload of 1000 kg and the 3500 kg towing capability of the Hilux Hybrid preserve the vehicle's ability to pull heavy loads. Up to 700 mm of wading depth is guaranteed for the vehicle thanks to the waterproofing of new electrical components.

The 2024 Toyota Hilux Hybrid's price will probably be a little more than the current model. The mild hybrid does not make it possible for the Hilux to have a plug-in hybrid version, but Toyota is considering other powertrain options. This includes a Hilux with hydrogen fuel cells that has a 365-mile range.
