The Caterham EV Seven Concept Weighs Just 1,543 Pounds, Which Is Incredible

Caterham has unveiled the EV Seven, a lightweight vehicle that weighs 1,543 pounds. Undoubtedly, this is a favorable statistic, particularly considering that the vehicle in question is an electric vehicle. Remarkably, the electric vehicle shows a mere 154-pound increase in weight compared to its internal combustion engine counterpart.

Now, a word or two about the approach itself. Swindon Powertrain, which has been supplying engines to Caterham since the early 1990s, designed the electric motor.

The E-axle has been designed to mimic the performance of a combustion engine, and it can generate 240 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Under the hood is where the 51 kWh battery pack is installed (of which 40 kWh are usable). It employs supercomputer-inspired immersion cooling, and thermal management is improved by cooling being handled by a dielectric fluid that is in close contact with the cells.

But don't hold your breath for the electric Seven to be put up for sale any time soon; according to Caterham CEO Bob Laishley, the vehicle is now just being used as a test bed to assess how well an EV powertrain performs. The Caterham EV Seven concept will have its world premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, which is great news.
