The 2025 VW Grand California Is A Tech-Savvy Camper Dream
by AutoExpert | 12 March, 2025
Volkswagen has given the Grand California a solid round of updates for 2025. This is the brand’s largest motorhome, and while it already had a lot going for it, the new model adds smarter tech, better connectivity, and upgraded driver-assistance features.
First launched in 2019, the VW Grand California is based on the VW Crafter, and the 2025 model year brings some noticeable upgrades. The big change inside is a new free-standing infotainment screen, available in either 10.4- or 12.9-inch sizes. It now supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which makes staying connected on the move a lot easier.

The Grand California also gets a digital instrument cluster and an optional voice assistant—with ChatGPT integration, no less. Other enhancements include an electronic handbrake with Auto Hold, a new gear selector, and more refined switchgear. Plus, Volkswagen has improved its Travel Assist system for smoother and safer long-distance cruising.
In the living area, there’s now a 5-inch vertical touchscreen—similar to what you’ll find in the smaller Multivan-based California. This camper control panel makes it easy to manage everything from the auxiliary heater to ambient lighting. VW’s California app also got a boost, letting you monitor key features like water levels and battery charge right from your smartphone.

On the outside, things look pretty much the same—apart from some updated rear badging. The Grand California is still available in two versions: the taller 600 and the longer 680. Both come with a full kitchen, a bathroom, and a sleeping area with either a transverse or longitudinal bed layout, depending on which model you choose.
As for amenities, it’s still well-equipped: a 70-liter fridge/freezer, a 110-liter freshwater tank, a two-burner stove, a sink, a shower, a comfy dining space, and a double bed. VW also throws in a pair of folding chairs and a camping table that neatly tuck into the rear doors when not in use.

Under the hood, it’s the familiar 2.0-liter TDI four-cylinder turbodiesel, now cleaner and compliant with the latest Euro VI HD emissions standards. It puts out 161 hp and 410 Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. You can choose front-wheel drive or VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive setup, depending on how off-grid you want to get.
The updated VW Grand California is already available to order. In the UK, pricing starts at £84,046 ($108,800) for the 600 model and £86,800 ($112,300) for the 680. Each one comes with a five-year warranty and roadside assistance for extra peace of mind.

Unfortunately, the Grand California isn’t sold in North America. However, there’s still hope: VW is reportedly working on a camper version of the electric ID.Buzz.
