The Toyota Hilux Champ, known as the Hilux Rangga in Indonesia, is branching out into a new bodystyle—a practical SUV designed for families. New Armada, an Indonesian company specializing in bus bodyworks, has carried out the transformation. The company recently unveiled the production-ready version on social media, confirming its launch for early 2025.

From the B-pillar forward, the SUV retains the familiar design of the pickup. However, everything beyond that point has undergone a redesign, featuring boxy styling that mirrors the truck's rugged appearance. The rear features a large tailgate adorned with “Rangga” lettering, a taller roof with integrated roof rails, and plenty of unpainted plastic cladding for a robust look. The black six-spoke alloy wheels complete the off-road vibe.

Inside, the Rangga SUV offers a three-row, 2+3+2 seating layout, accommodating up to seven passengers. The seats are finished in a leather-like material and include a reclining function for added comfort. It’s a functional and spacious interior, designed to meet family needs while retaining a utilitarian feel.

The Rangga shares its underpinnings with the regular Hilux and Fortuner, riding on a more affordable version of Toyota’s IMV ladder-frame chassis. It’s powered by either a 2.0-liter gasoline engine producing 137 hp or a 2.4-liter turbodiesel with 148 hp. Rear-wheel drive pairs both engines with either a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.

Pricing for the Rangga SUV is surprisingly competitive. According to Anton Jimmy Suwandi, Marketing Director at Toyota Astra Motor, the gasoline variant with a manual gearbox will start at under Rp400,000,000 (around $25,000). For reference, the base Rangga pickup starts at Rp188,700,000 ($11,800), while the Fortuner SUV begins at Rp573,700,000 ($35,800).

Toyota hasn't yet confirmed whether the Rangga SUV will be available outside of Indonesia, but its affordability and versatility might make it a desirable choice.
