Subaru Forester Hybrid Prepares For U.S. Debut With Improved Efficiency

Subaru will soon roll out a hybrid version of its new-generation Forester in the U.S., and while it’s currently badged as a 2025 model, it might actually hit dealerships as a 2026 model. Either way, the new Subaru Forester Hybrid promises to deliver better fuel efficiency and lower emissions without giving up Subaru’s trademark Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.

It’s likely the same hybrid system Subaru introduced in the Crosstrek Hybrid in Japan last October. It’s a self-charging hybrid that can switch between the gasoline engine and electric motor automatically, depending on how and where you’re driving.

The powertrain pairs a 2.5-liter flat-four engine, rated for 158 horsepower, with two electric motors. One of those motors handles traction, adding 118 horsepower to help drive the wheels, while the other acts as a generator. A small 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery powers the system.

Although the Subaru Forester Hybrid won't provide much electric-only driving, its design prioritizes boosting overall fuel economy over operating like a plug-in hybrid.

Subaru worked closely with Toyota to develop this system, tapping into their hybrid expertise. Subaru's setup is reportedly 20% more fuel-efficient than its older e-Boxer hybrid, sold overseas but never made it to the U.S.

Subaru hasn’t locked in a specific launch date yet, but it’s already letting potential buyers sign up for updates on its website. The brand describes the Subaru Forester Hybrid as an SUV that keeps all the adventure-ready features people love about the Forester while adding better efficiency and cleaner emissions.

As for pricing, the standard 2025 Forester starts at $29,695, plus a $1,420 delivery fee, bringing it to $31,115 before taxes. The Subaru Forester Hybrid will definitely cost more, but for drivers who want rugged capability without the constant gas station stops, it might be worth the extra cash.
