Second Recall This Year: Over 2,100 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana Vehicles Under Investigation in the U.S.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Office of Defects Investigation is currently scrutinizing a reported issue with the 6L90 transmission in select Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana models. These concerns have led to questions about the reliability of these vehicles, many of which are utilized as school buses and ambulances.

The complaint lodged with NHTSA suggests that these vehicles may experience a sudden loss of power when shifting into drive or reverse. Given that many are in service as school buses and ambulances, this defect could potentially result in students being stranded or delay crucial medical transport.

Upon being alerted, the Office of Defects Investigation contacted General Motors for a deeper probe. The issue was traced back to two production runs of valve body separator plates that had been incorrectly machined. According to GM, around 90 of the affected vehicles are ambulances, and nearly 2,000 are school buses.

While the Office of Defects Investigation is escalating its assessment of the potential safety implications, an official recall has not been issued as of yet.

This wouldn't be the first recall for the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana models this year. In April, roughly 150,000 models were recalled due to an issue with unsealed circuit connectors or cut wires, which could lead to corrosion if exposed to moisture or contaminants.

The Chevrolet Express models under scrutiny were assembled between August 12, 2022, and March 27, 2023, while the GMC Savana models were built from May 8, 2002, to March 23, 2023.
