Rivian Joins Forces With VW For The Golf 9 Electric Revolution

The Volkswagen Golf is ready to enter a new era with the ninth generation, which will be released in 2029. For the first time in the model's history, the Golf 9 will be all electric, representing a big move for Wolfsburg's flagship compact.

The new Golf will have American traits thanks to a strategic partnership with Rivian, a firm known for its electric pickup trucks and SUVs. According to Volkswagen brand manager Thomas Schäfer, Rivian will play an important role in software development for the next-generation car.

"We have opted to form a joint venture with Rivian to build software-defined cars. We will mix current electrical and technical design into this legendary vehicle. We'll begin this journey with the Golf," Schäfer stated.

The Volkswagen Group's next-generation electric vehicle design, the SSP (Scalable Systems Platform), will serve as the foundation for the future Golf 9. It provides more efficiency and integration possibilities for digital technologies. While the ninth generation will debut, the current model, the Golf 8, which was introduced in 2019, will be manufactured until 2035. The two generations will be produced simultaneously, giving customers both electric and conventional options during the transition period.
