Ram Recalls Over 300,000 Pickups For Brake Control Defect

Ram is recalling 317,630 pickup trucks from 2017 and 2018 because of a potential issue with the hydraulic brake control unit. If this malfunctions, it could increase the risk of accidents, as vital systems such as electronic stability control, traction control, and ABS may cease to function.

The affected models include the Ram 2500, 3500, and other models from the 3500, 4500, and 5500 series. These cars have a control unit that is prone to intermittent or permanent failure, according to official documentation.

If the ABS and traction systems malfunction, they might stop working or only work intermittently, often without any obvious signs. However, if there’s an issue, the ABS warning light should come on, letting the driver know the system needs attention.

Together with FCA US, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been looking into the issue for over two years. The study included testing a customer-reported item, which confirmed the problem and led to the recall decision.

Owners will receive notifications early next month. Ram stated that authorized dealerships will replace the hydraulic control unit at no cost to ensure that cars meet safety requirements.
