Porsche's Gasoline Farewell: End Of An Era For 718 Boxster, Cayman, And Macan

Porsche withdrew the gasoline-powered 718 Boxster, Cayman, and Macan from sale in Europe earlier this year due to new cybersecurity laws. However, the trio is still sellable outside of the European Union.

Porsche's production manager, Albrecht Reimold, confirmed to Automobilwoche that Porsche will discontinue the Boxster and Cayman in the middle of next year. That's because Porsche is moving on with the all-electric successor, and he claims it will be a "real fun car."

Older Macan models are also on the chopping block since they use gas engines, like other Porsches. There may be a new electric vehicle on the horizon, but the previous sporty crossover is still selling well in markets outside of Europe. Reimold has said that the corporation will be fully committed to the electric replacement by the middle of 2026.

Due to a lack of readily available components, the ICE model is rapidly approaching its end. Furthermore, the ever-tightening rules in Europe are further threatening the Macan's survival. According to Reimold, "Volume alone is not a benchmark for us as a luxury manufacturer."

This means that buying a vehicle that is ten years old, even if it's a best-seller, is just not financially practical. According to sales data, deliveries will drop significantly in 2023 due to the imminent deaths of these three vehicles. At 20,518 sales, the 718 range had a 13% increase from the previous year, while the Macan's demand was unchanged at 87,355 cars. Only 200 units separated the Cayenne as the best-selling Porsche SUV from the Macan.
