Porsche Mission R Was Meticulously Constructed, Despite Its Status As A Concept Car

As a concept car, Porsche Mission R was completely functional and tested on Porsche's internal test track before it had a body attached to it. It's already capable of racing, according to the manufacturer. The Mission R's technical project manager, Michael Behr, adds, "That's the Porsche philosophy." As a display car, this prototype obviously meets the highest technical standards at this point.

Porsche says it designed Mission R electric racer with the same care as a production car. It examined innovative ways to manufacture electric motors capable of long-distance racing.

This is due to Mission R's directly cooled stator. The oil-cooled engines and batteries were learned through racing the 919 Hybrid at Le Mans. The team employed 3D printing significantly to keep the concept's weight under 1500 kg (3,306 lbs). The single-speed transmission case, for example, is 30% lighter than the cast.

But lightweight materials aren't the only option. The EV's regenerative braking technology saved Porsche 12 kg on the braking system. The chassis was tested on track before the design team even thought of the body, which is both lightweight and sustainable due to natural and carbon fiber. Lars Kern drove the car months before its introduction with only a steel framework.

“I was amazed at how advanced the car was,” Kern added. "Also, the immediate availability of incredible torque and driving characteristics. This is going to be a lot of fun.” Porsche stated it doesn't frequently build such a full prototype, but listed a few examples. Among them are the Boxster, Carrera GT, 918 Spyder, and Mission E, which anticipated the Taycan.
