The Germans from Porsche are planning for a quite long while to reduce the cylinder capacity in order to comply with the pollution standards, and the first efforts are likely to yield favorable results during this very autumn when Porsche will exhibit a new, four-cylinder engine at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

According to preliminary information, the engine will derive from the current 3.2-liter 6-cylinder unit. The new 2.5-liter engine will feature a DFI (Direct Fuel Injection) technology, a single turbocharger, and a Porsche VarioCam Plus system.

The engine is supposed to generate no less than 350 horsepower, a torque of 487 Nm, and reach up to 7500 revolutions per minute. The resources will be managed by the slightly revised "PDK" dual-clutch transmission.

The first models to benefit from the new engine are the current Cayman and Boxster models. In the hopefully not-too-distant future, namely by 2015, Porsche plans to successfully use this unit in a completely new, entry-level model.
