Opel Astra Start Goes Back To Steel Wheels To Keep Prices Down
by AutoExpert | 16 October, 2026
There’s something almost rebellious about launching a new car in 2026 with steel wheels and plastic hubcaps. But Opel’s new Astra Start isn’t trying to win a fashion contest. It’s aimed at buyers who would rather save money than pay extra for shiny alloys, and it still comes with more equipment than you might expect.
“The 16-inch steel wheels give away the cheaper trim. Otherwise, the Astra looks much the same.”

The Opel Astra Start keeps its LED headlights, illuminated Vizor grille, sculpted facelifted bumpers, rear spoiler, and LED taillights. Denim Blue Metallic is the standard paint color, so at least buyers don’t have to settle for something that looks like it came from a fleet manager’s spreadsheet.

The cabin is hardly basic, either. Two 10-inch screens handle the digital instruments and infotainment, while standard equipment includes automatic climate control, keyless start, a multifunction steering wheel, cabin LED lighting, and six-way manually adjustable Intelli-Seats. There’s also a four-speaker audio system with DAB+ radio. Front and rear parking sensors come standard, although a rearview camera requires a higher trim.

Three powertrains are available, and all come with automatic gearboxes. The 143-hp 1.2-liter mild-hybrid gasoline engine uses a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the 130-hp diesel gets an eight-speed automatic. The electric Astra produces 154 hp and uses a 55.4-kWh battery, delivering a claimed WLTP range of 282 miles.

Prices for the mild-hybrid Astra Start begin at €31,890, or €1,600 less than the previous entry-level model. Other options include extra-cost paint at €750, the Comfort Pack starting at €500 for the hatchback, and alloy wheels with all-season tires costing another €800. The Sports Tourer wagon adds €1,500. So yes, you can have the nicer wheels.
