Nissan Says Brake Caliper Colors Actually Mean Something

Think brake caliper colors are just there to look good? Nissan says they actually serve a purpose. According to the automaker, the color behind the wheels acts as a quick visual guide, revealing the type of braking system fitted to the car and the level of performance it's built to handle.

The idea goes back to the 1999 R34 Skyline GT-R, when Brembo brakes became one of the model's defining features. Since then, Nissan has used different caliper finishes to distinguish everyday road cars from models equipped with more track-focused hardware.

If you spot silver calipers on a Nissan, you're looking at the company's regular road-focused braking system. They'll perform well on the road, but repeated hard laps are likely to expose their limits. Even the standard Nissan Z comes with silver-painted two-piston front calipers. Move up to the Z Performance, and those make way for larger Akebono four-piston brakes finished in red.

The brighter red used on the Z Nismo signals another step up. Its front braking system is derived from the GT-R and includes larger rotors and more track-capable hardware. Years ago, Nissan's highest-performance models wore gold calipers instead, making the color a familiar sight on icons like the R34 GT-R, 350Z Track Edition, and R35 GT-R.

Yellow sits at the top of Nissan's brake hierarchy. Reserved exclusively for carbon-ceramic systems, it identifies brakes engineered to cope with extreme temperatures and repeated track use. No current Nissan model wears yellow calipers, but they appeared on cars like the 2020 GT-R Nismo and GT-R Track Edition.

So the next time you spot a Nissan with brightly colored brake calipers, they may be telling you more about the car than you realized.
