Nio is buzzing into the EV market with its Firefly brand! Specifically, Nio has unveiled its new Firefly brand in China, focusing on affordable electric vehicles. The first model is a compact hatchback designed for urban driving, featuring swappable batteries and targeting markets in Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. Firefly aims to bring stylish, high-quality EVs within reach of more people.

The car’s design, led by former BMW and Ford designer Kris Tomasson, blends simplicity with modern touches. Its blacked-out roof and slim pillars give it a sleek profile, while the circular LED lights at the front and rear add a unique, high-tech feel.

Firefly kept the design clean, with flush door handles and sculpted bodywork. The lower body panels feature recycled materials, highlighting its eco-friendly approach. Spy photos suggest a minimalist cabin with a large touchscreen and digital gauge cluster, similar to what you'd find in a Tesla.

Perfect for city life, the Firefly promises effortless maneuvering with a tight 9.4-meter turning radius and an automated parking system to simplify tight spots.

Safety was a big focus during development. The body structure uses over 80% high-strength steel and aluminum, with reinforced doors and nine airbags included as standard. It’s engineered to meet top safety standards in both China and Europe, and Firefly claims it has best-in-class structural rigidity.

Technical details about the motor and battery size are still under wraps, but the car will come with swappable batteries. However, these batteries are smaller than Nio’s current options, so they’ll need separate swap stations. Pricing starts at ¥148,800 (roughly $20,400) in China, with deliveries set for April 2025. We expect a European launch later that year but expect higher prices overseas.
