New Car Safety Mandate: Automatic Emergency Braking Required by 2030

Hey there, buckle up! We're getting deeper into car safety, where things are getting a little... weird. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is hitting the brakes on car crashes with a brand new rule: all new cars are mandated to have automatic emergency braking (AEB) by 2030. This means that it automatically slams on the brakes to avoid accidents. Sounds like a win, right?

Well, hold on to your steering wheel. In May, the NHTSA investigated self-driving cars from Zoox because... they braked too suddenly. It's like they forgot the whole "avoid accidents" part! Here's the thing: AEB is like a training wheels version of safety. It helps human drivers avoid bumps and bruises. Zoox's self-driving system, however, is supposed to be Iron Man behind the wheel – super-aware and reacting in a flash.

Car Safety

The current AEB systems are a bit dim-witted. They struggle to see in the dark or bad weather, and only react to accidents happening in slow motion. The new NHTSA rules are like giving AEB a brain transplant – it'll work at higher speeds and even spot pedestrians to avoid them.

Car Safety

Here's the plot twist: Zoox's self-driving system already has all the smarts of the new AEB. However, it might be a little bit too cautious, as it hits the brake in such a manner that it causes rear-end collisions.

Some folks are worried that even the smartest self-driving cars won't be perfect. They might have to choose between hitting something or swerving into danger – not exactly a win-win situation.

Car Safety

But the good news is both AEB and self-driving cars are steps towards a future with fewer accidents. The ultimate goal is zero traffic fatalities, but like airbags (they saved lives, but had some kinks to work out!), it might take some time.

Car Safety

The bottom line? AEB is a fantastic safety feature, and while self-driving cars might need some practice on the brake pedal, they're both headed in the right direction for a safer tomorrow. Let's just hope they learn to use the brakes a little smoother!
