Mercedes will use three cylinder engines for the models with rear drive!

The Germans from Mercedes-Benz plan to align the capacity reduction trend engines, following the example of BMW to launch a new generation of three-cylinder engines. The Stuttgart manufacturer, however, promises a balanced policy on the integration of three-cylinder units within the range.

Mercedes wants to introduce its future only on the compact engines without compromising the performance terms. Bernhard Heil, the head of engine development, said at the Geneva Motor Show that the three-cylinder engines will not only be on the basic model range, ie with the rear drive. The decision was taken to avoid the compromises that which customers would not accept.

The official said that Mercedes has tested the installation of such engines on models with rear drive, but lack of refinement and vibrations are too high, especially at low speeds, when it is assumed that running would be most effective. A-Class and B-Class in turn are suitable for installation of diesel and petrol three-cylinder, given their size, type of propulsion and target audience.

The compact models have the chance to receive three-cylinder units with an electric motor, thus forming a hybrid solution.
