Mazda EZ-6 Electric Sedan Promises Innovation For Chinese Market

Just recently, images of the electric Mazda EZ-6 began to circulate on Chinese social media. We already know that there will be two model options: the Mazda EZ-6, which is all-electric, and the Mazda EZ-60, which has a longer driving range.

The new electric sedan from Mazda's Chinese joint venture with Changan has teased its silhouette and details, like the taillights, on social media before making its debut at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show. As a possible replacement for the defunct Mazda 6 (Atenza), the mid-size vehicle may only be available in China.

The Changan The J90A (totally electric vehicle) and the J90A-REEV (range-extender) are two 2024 debuts that Mazda has already announced. In 2025, the J90K and J90K-REEV will join them, bringing even more models to the local inventory. In China, Mazda has trademarked two nameplates: EZ-6 for an electric sedan and EZ-60 for an SUV. The former is a likely candidate for the 2018 model year.

Chinese media reports that Changan's EPA1 architecture, presently employed by the Deepal/Shenlan SL03 sedan and the related S7 SUV, will serve as the foundation for the new Mazda. The chassis can accommodate both all-electric and range-extender powertrains; the latter uses a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine to increase the vehicle's usable driving range.

The automaker's recent trademarking of the Mazda 6e moniker in Europe has fueled rumors about a new version of the midsize sedan. Whether this model is a spinoff for western markets or related to the Changan-based sedan remains unclear.

The current models that Changan Mazda offers in China are the Mazda 3, CX-30, CX-50, and CX-5. So, the latest model will be the only sedan in the lineup to offer a totally electric drivetrain with a three-box layout.
