Maximizing EV Battery Life: Essential Tips for Longevity

Okay, we love our EVs, but those batteries can be kinda picky. To keep them running strong for years, we need to follow some basic rules – nothing crazy, but it's worth knowing.

Jason over at Engineering Explained (fellow nerd, we love him) lays it out perfectly:

EV Battery Life

Rule #1: Don't baby your battery TOO much.

Leaving your EV charged to 100% all the time, especially in the heat, is a bad idea. Lithium-ion batteries lose power over time anyway, but that gets worse if they're always full, especially in hot weather. So, if you're gonna be gone for a while, drain it down to 30% or so.

EV Battery Life

Rule #2: Don't let it go bone-dry either.

We know it's tempting to use up every single mile of range, but batteries actually prefer being topped up regularly. Think of those full-depth charges (0% to 100%) like junk food for your car. Try to keep it above 25% whenever possible.

EV Battery Life

Rule #3: No need to max it out all the time.

For everyday driving, it's actually better to keep the charge under 80%. That last little bit at the top stresses the battery. Road trips are the exception, of course, but for your daily commute, stick to a more relaxed charging routine.

EV Battery Life

Basically, treat your EV battery like you SHOULD treat yourself – moderation, avoid extreme highs and lows, and remember that consistency is key! Do this, and that battery should be humming along for years.
