Marine Majesty: Meet The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class Inspired By A Classic Yacht

Recently, Mercedes-Maybach unveiled an exclusive S-Class model that drew inspiration from a 1939 racing boat. This custom S-Class is a nod to a very particular source of inspiration in honor of the 150th anniversary of Robbe & Berking, the Flensburg-based silversmiths.

Oliver Berking, one of the company's current owners, founded the Flensburg-based yacht shipyard Robbe & Berking Classics, which is now associated with Maybach. 

Drawing inspiration from the Mercedes-Maybach S680, this tribute is shaped like a two-tone exterior: Nautical Blue Metallic paint job establishes the scene. At the same time, a splash of Patagonia Red conjures up images of the open sea. Naturally, an Opalite White Metallic pinstripe, as fine as a seashell, divides the two colors. In 1939, the Abeking & Rasmussen boatyard constructed the Sphinx yacht, which is 70.47 feet long. The Sphinx yacht underwent several ownership changes before regaining its former beauty in 2005.

The Maybach has an interior that is also remarkable. Crystal White Maybach Manufaktur Exclusive Nappa leather with ample diamond quilting adorns every surface, including the seats, headliner, door panels, and storage cubby. You'll find wood paneling throughout. The walnut wood inlays, adorned with aluminum trim strips, are designed to mimic the look of a ship's deck.

The seats, upholstered in matching Crystal White Nappa leather, heavily feature diamond quilting. Maybach branding illuminates the side sills to ensure you never forget the brand of land yacht you are driving. The 6.0-liter V12 twin-turbo engine is located under the hood and is capable of 603 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque.

There are a few different Maybach S-Class trims to choose from: the flagship S680, the S580 with a twin-turbo V8, and the S480, which is unique to China and has an inline-six engine. A plug-in hybrid system centered on a six-cylinder engine is available in the S580e, the last model.

According to Maybach, the owner's identity and the price of this custom S680 remained a mystery.
