Michigan-based battery innovator Our Next Energy (ONE) has teamed up with BMW to push the boundaries of electric vehicle range, achieving a staggering 608.1 miles (978.6 km) on a single charge in a BMW iX.

This groundbreaking achievement, powered by ONE's Gemini dual-chemistry battery technology, marks a significant leap in EV capabilities, offering nearly 75 percent more range than the standard iX model.

Dual-Chemistry Technology: The Game-Changer

The key to this remarkable range lies in ONE's unique Gemini battery system. This innovative technology merges the reliability of lithium iron phosphate cells for everyday driving with the power of high-density anode-free cells for extended journeys. The result is a battery pack that not only extends the driving range but also does so with sustainability in mind.

Innovative EV Battery

A Sustainable Approach to Power

In comparison to traditional lithium-ion cells, the Gemini technology stands out for its eco-friendliness. It uses 20 percent less graphite and 60 percent less nickel and cobalt, aligning with consumer demand for more sustainable energy solutions. This approach could revolutionize the electric vehicle industry, making EVs a more viable and eco-conscious choice for a broader audience.

Breaking Barriers in Electrification

Mujeeb Ijaz, CEO and founder of ONE, emphasizes that electric vehicles will gain widespread acceptance when they can confidently serve as a sole vehicle option for consumers. The Gemini battery's ability to double the range of EVs is a crucial step in overcoming one of the biggest hurdles to electrification – range anxiety.

Refining for Commercialization

With the successful test in the BMW iX, ONE is now focused on refining its technology for commercial use. This includes enhancing the efficiency of the DC-to-DC converter that integrates the two types of battery cells and developing improved control algorithms to optimize the use of the range-extending cells.

BMW’s Enthusiastic Endorsement

Jürgen Hildinger, Head of High Voltage Storage at BMW Group New Technologies, praised the achievement, expressing excitement about continuing the collaboration with ONE. The partnership between BMW and ONE not only showcases the potential of advanced battery technology but also signals a promising future for long-range electric vehicles.
