In A New Filing, BMW Has Reserved M7 And M9 Badge Names

In the automobile industry, setting aside future names for its vehicles is nothing new. BMW is no stranger to such strategies. According to a new filing from the Philippines' Intellectual Property Office, BMW owns the “M7” and “M9” badge titles.

BMW has never produced an actual M7. The M Division has never believed that the 7 Series made sense as an M vehicle, for whatever reason. It did, however, reserve the name in 2018. Unlike the previous BMW M760Li, which is an M Performance vehicle, any BMW with the M7 logo on the boot would be a real M Division item.

As a result, the M760Li has a much higher level of luxury. We've driven several 7 Series models and can confidently state that, while impressive, the 7er isn't the greatest luxury car on the market. It is, however, a pleasant drive, and the chassis is superb for such a large, heavy vehicle. So we can picture what a BMW M7 might look like, and it's a fascinating concept.

However, given the trend toward electrification, the chances of seeing a petrol-powered M7 are minimal. An electrified M7, on the other hand, could work better in the future. When it refers to the M9, the uncertainty around a prospective model has grown even larger. The M9 moniker has been speculated previously, and it may be a customized model, similar to the forthcoming BMW XM, which lacks a BMW series counterpart. Sadly, these filings don't provide any further information.
