Iconic Lines, Modern Power: The 1969 Bertone Runabout Returns With 493 HP And A Targa Twist

Bertone is bringing Marcello Gandini’s iconic 1969 Runabout concept back to life with a modern twist. Over half a century after its debut, the Runabout will hit the road as a retro-futuristic supercar, blending the original’s sharp wedge shape with new elements for everyday usability and performance.

The updated Runabout stays true to the original’s sleek, angular design but with several contemporary touches. Gone are the quirky high-mounted headlights flanking the occupants’ heads; instead, the new model features pop-up lights elegantly incorporated into the front.

Access has also improved—doors replace the high sills of the original, making the cockpit easier to enter, while side mirrors add a practical edge. Unlike the 1969 concept, which was an open barchetta, this new Runabout will be available with a targa top, offering some protection from the elements.

Bertone announced that production will begin in mid-2026, with prices starting at €350,000 (about £290,000 before VAT). This revival marks the first in a planned series of Bertone models paying homage to the Italian design house’s legendary past.

Each car will marry classic aesthetics with advanced engineering and impressive performance. Bertone even manufactured the Fiat X1/9 sports car, which enjoyed a run from 1972 to 1989, drawing heavily from the original Runabout. Now, with this rebirth, Bertone is bringing the spirit of its heritage into the future.
