Hungary introduces new fines - 700 euros for speeding!

The number of road accidents in Hungary is alarming, which is why the authorities have decided to double the fines for breaches of traffic rules.

Hungary can boast with good roads and highest fines in Europe. However, the number of road accidents did not decrease and the number of deaths in accidents has increased. Thus in 2013, 591 people died in accidents and in 2014 this figure rose to 626. That is why the authorities have decided to take actions to lower them.

The fine for exceeding the speed limit varies between 300 and 700 euros. When driving intoxicated: 300 - 1000 euro and license is suspended for 6-12 months driving, parking near the crosswalk: 75-150 euro and car parking in spots reserved for invalids brings a fine ranging from 150 to 300 euro.

Fines are not the only measures which the authorities have applied in the fight against unruly drivers. Hungarians installed a new camera system for traffic monitoring. It promises to be among the most modern in existing systems and can identify even the smallest violations including, driving on a lane destined for public transport, railroad crossing violation and not wearing the safety belt.

The new cameras successfully passed testing in February and on the 26^th of March were put into operation. Currently, in Hungary, there are 160 stationary and 400 mobile cameras. By 2020 authorities expect the new measures to substantially reduce the number of road accidents.
