For the European market, Volkswagen revamped its California camper van. To start with, it's bigger than before and comes with a new hybrid engine. The coast, Ocean, Beach Tour, and Beach Camper are the five different trim levels for the new camper van.

Two sliding doors with mosquito nets and a rooftop tent are standard features of every model. For Volkswagen vehicles, a new awning will be available as an option in certain regions and as standard equipment in others.

The interior now features two separate seats that can still be converted into beds. In order to ensure that passengers can still leave the vehicle from either side, engineers reworked the Coast and Ocean's complete kitchenette and pushed it to the back. Volkswagen California Camper Van's kitchenette features cupboards, a sink, and an externally accessible gas stove with one burner.

The Beach Camper package includes a gas burner, two drawers, and storage in the permanently installed rear slide-out tiny kitchen. Not only are the back seats detachable, but they also include a handy drawer for extra storage space. Throughout the interior, you'll find many 45-watt USB-C charging connections installed by VW. With a double-tap on any light switch, owners can simultaneously turn off all interior LED and backdrop lights.

VW's new camper control unit, located in the passenger side C-pillar, is standard on Beach Tour trim levels and above. The infotainment system and a mobile app provide access to its many features. The top-of-the-line Ocean model has a 7.4-gallon freshwater tank, heated front seats, supplementary air heating, a storage compartment on top, a folding table, two camper batteries, and two 230-volt outlets (one inside and one outside).

Three different powertrains will be available when the new camper hits the market. Both the gas engines, with 204 horsepower, and the four-cylinder turbodiesel, with 150 horsepower, drive the front wheels. Featuring 245 horsepower and 4Motion all-wheel drive, the new plug-in hybrid option is sure to turn heads. Its maximum towing capacity is 4,409 pounds.
