Mazda made a big statement in the press release for the facelifted CX-5. The i-Activ all-wheel-drive system will be included throughout the whole range of Mazda CX vehicles in the US market debuting with the 2022 model year. Mazda's SUV lineup in the United States currently includes the CX-3, CX-30, CX-5, and flagship CX-9. All of them were previously available in FWD and AWD configurations, though the latter was an extra.

Because the more cost-effective FWD versions are being phased out, the starting costs of the Mazda CX models will rise. 2021 Mazda CX-3, for example, starts at $21.965 for FWD and $23.365 for AWD. The somewhat larger 2021 CX-30 is priced at $23.225 in FWD and $24.625 in AWD.

Mazda's plan to offer exclusively all-wheel-drive SUVs in the United States is part of the company's "push into the luxury space." Mazda intends to compete with luxury brands such as BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Lexus rather than conventional mainstream brands such as Toyota, Honda, and Subaru.

With the support of a future rear-wheel-drive chassis and a new collection of inline-six motors, Mazda's future lineup will go upmarket. The i-Activ AWD approach enhances performance and safety in all meteorological conditions, in addition to giving the vehicle a more premium appearance.

Although only a small fraction of SUV owners will venture off the established path, the AWD on all Mazda CX models system gives the driver more safety even if he never leaves the road. Based on the applied acceleration and cornering forces, Mazda's technology continuously analyzes weight transfer and directs power to the proper wheels. As a result, the business believes that it highlights the improved driving dynamics that customers prefer.
