Ever turned the corner only to find the street looking more like a canal? Yep, surprise floods are no joke, and while the best advice is to steer clear of flooded roads, sometimes you're caught off-guard. Here’s the lowdown on what to do if you find yourself facing a watery roadway without an ark in sight.

Prep Your Ride

  • Quick Once-Over: Before you head out into what looks like the next Great Flood, check your car’s essentials—lights, wipers, tires. Trust me, you want them all in fighting shape.
  • Plan Ahead: Got a navigation app? Use it. Check for flood warnings or road closures—it’s always better to know before you go.

Flooded Roads

Hitting the Water

  • Slow and Steady: This isn’t the time for speed. Drive slow enough to keep control and prevent your engine from taking on water.
  • Middle of the Road: Aim to drive down the center of the road. It’s usually the shallowest part. Avoid the edges where the water tends to be deeper and hides more surprises.
  • Play Nice: Remember, your visibility drops in these conditions, and speeding past someone can splash water onto their windshield, making it worse for everyone.

Flooded Roads

If It Looks Deep

  • Just Don’t: If you can see the water's deep, don't risk it. Turn around, don’t drown—it’s a catchy saying because it’s true.
  • Car Cuts Out?: If your engine dies, don’t try to start it again. This can cause serious damage. If it’s safe, just get out and get to higher ground.

After the Waters

  • Dry Those Brakes: Light taps on the brake pedal after you’re out can help dry them off.
  • Inspect Your Car: Once you’re on dry land, check for any damage. Listen for new or odd sounds from the engine that could spell trouble.
  • Water Inside?: Check if water got into your oil (look for a milky residue on your dipstick) or air filter. Water where it shouldn’t be means a trip to the mechanic.

Flooded Roads

What If You’re Stuck in a Flood?

  • Warnings Are Key: Seriously, if there’s a flood warning, just don’t go out. It’s not worth the risk.
  • Escaping a Sinking Car: If water’s rising and you’re stuck, stay calm. Unbuckle, open the window (break it if you need to), and make your exit. Always try to head for something solid to hold onto or higher ground.

Why Avoid Water on the Roads?

  • Hydroplaning: Little bit of water can make your car slide uncontrollably.
  • Damage Alert: Engines and electronics hate water. Plus, fast-moving water can literally sweep your vehicle off the road.

Flooded Roads

Bottom line? Flooded roads are trouble. Try to avoid them when you can. But if you’re caught out there, keep these tips in mind to navigate safely. Stay calm, drive smart, and keep your car in one piece. Stay safe out there!
