Dongfeng’s New Warrior M817 Is A 700-HP Hybrid Monster

China’s Dongfeng is back with another beastly off-roader—the Warrior M817, a new plug-in hybrid 4×4 packing a massive 700 horsepower. Yes, it’s toned down compared to the all-electric M-Hero 917.
Visually, the M817 keeps things bold and boxy. It was shown in silver (base trim) and black (flagship spec), both rocking aggressive styling with squared-off edges, chunky bumpers, and sharp LED taillights. The base model gets an open grille with M-Hero branding, while the flagship swaps in a gloss-black faux grille. There’s also a choice between a traditional spare tire carrier or a larger rear storage box, depending on trim.

Other standout details include flared arches, generous ground clearance (exact numbers TBA), functional side steps, and two roof rail options. Size-wise, it’s a proper giant: just over 5.1 meters long (200.7 in), nearly 2 meters wide (78.6 in), and up to 1.92 meters tall (75.7 in) with air suspension. The wheelbase stretches a full 3 meters, and approach/departure angles are a solid 30 degrees.

Under the hood, things get interesting. The hybrid setup combines a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine with two electric motors, delivering 700 hp in total. That’s shy of the 1,073 hp you get from the all-electric 917, but still wild for a vehicle this size. If reports are accurate, Dongfeng is planning both left- and right-hand drive versions, meaning global ambitions could be on the horizon.

The Warrior M817 makes its full debut this weekend at the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Auto Show. Stay tuned—this could be China’s boldest hybrid truck yet.
