Dongfeng M817 SUV Offers 912 HP For $46K And It’s Already A Hit

The Dongfeng M-Hero M817 is already turning heads in China, and it hasn’t even hit the streets yet. Just days after its debut, Dongfeng opened pre-orders and got flooded with nearly 10,000 refundable deposits in under 24 hours.
Sure, refundable means not everyone’s locked in, but still, that kind of response screams major hype.

The M817 is a joint effort between Dongfeng and Huawei and slots just below the larger M-Hero 917. However, don’t let the “smaller” tag fool you—this thing is no lightweight.

It’s powered by a range-extender setup: a 1.5-liter turbo engine under the hood and two electric motors that bring the total output to a massive 912 horsepower and 1,280 Nm of torque. That’s enough muscle to launch this beast from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.2 seconds. It can drive up to 124 miles on electric power alone, which is not bad for a chunky SUV.

Starting at around $46,000 and topping out near $50,000, the Dongfeng M817 is seriously competitive on price. No plans for a U.S. release, but rumors say it’ll be built in both left- and right-hand drive. So, a global rollout isn’t off the table.

The M817 has the looks, the power, and the price to make a serious impact. China’s clearly paying attention, and soon, maybe the rest of the world will too.
