The Daihatsu Taft Gets A Tech And Safety Boost For 2027

The Daihatsu Taft may have been around since 2020, but it's not being left behind. To keep pace with newer rivals in Japan's kei crossover segment, Daihatsu has refreshed the model with upgraded tech, improved safety features, and a pair of lifestyle-focused special editions.

The newcomers are called Rugged Venture and Active Mode, both based on the well-equipped G and G Turbo trims. Rugged Venture combines Smoked Chrome and Black accents on the grille and tailgate garnish with 15-inch gunmetal alloy wheels and matching cabin details.

Active Mode takes a stealthier approach with darker trim throughout, while an optional Active Mode Style package spices things up with orange accents on the grille, wheels, side profile, fog lights, and rear reflectors.

Elsewhere, the Taft's styling stays largely the same, with the only change being the addition of a new Spark Orange paint option. Inside, Daihatsu has introduced a 7-inch digital instrument cluster with sharper graphics, while the 9-inch infotainment system remains optional. A removable underfloor storage box adds a bit more practicality, and the panoramic glass roof remains available.

The biggest upgrades are reserved for the safety systems. New sensors allow the Taft to detect cyclists, oncoming traffic during right turns, and pedestrians crossing while turning in either direction. The pedestrian collision avoidance system now operates at speeds of up to 50 mph, while Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keep Assist have also been recalibrated for smoother performance.

The powertrain lineup remains unchanged, with buyers choosing between a naturally aspirated 658 cc three-cylinder producing 51 hp or a turbocharged version making 63 hp. Both engines are paired with a CVT and offered with either front- or four-wheel drive. Pricing in Japan starts at ¥1,435,500 ($8,800) and rises to ¥1,930,500 ($11,900) for the range-topping Active Mode Turbo with 4WD.
