Cupra Formentor and Cupra Leon have just received their first makeover. Quite a few modifications are occurring under the surface, as well as the more obvious adjustments to the style. Taking a cue from the Terramar SUV, the designers at Cupra have given both vehicles a new "shark-nose" front appearance.

Modernized Cupra Formentor and Leon versions have a broad grille, new headlights with a triangle matrix LED design, and Cupra badging. The cars' back ends have also undergone modifications, featuring updated taillights and a lit Cupra emblem.

The VW Group's MQB Evo platform serves as the foundation for both models. While the platform remains unchanged, VW Group has improved the flagship 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine of the more performance-oriented variants. This engine, previously available on the hatchback, is now exclusive to the Formentor and Leon Sportstourer, where it generates an impressive 328 horsepower.

The Cupra driving mode modifies the throttle and gearbox action, and models fitted with this engine also had Akebono brakes and a clever torque splitter. Only vehicles equipped with the 2.0-liter, seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and all-wheel drive are offered for sale. Both Leon and the CUPRA Formentor have played critical roles in the brand's global expansion.

Deliveries of almost 600,000 vehicles since the brand's introduction in 2018 attest to the strategy's efficacy, according to Cupra CEO Wayne Griffiths. “The new CUPRA Formentor and Leon are pure design obsessions. Two models built to provoke strong emotions and strengthen the extraordinary bond with our Tribe. Two models that represent what that small group of believers imagined CUPRA could be just a few years ago,” he said.
