BMW is now working on the Neue Klasse platform, which will take the company's electrification to the next level. Both FAAR and CLAR will be replaced by the Neue Klasse platform. As a result of its modular architecture, it will be capable of running in front-wheel drive (FWD), as well as in rear-wheel drive (RWD).

BMW plans to use the modular architecture for all of its future vehicles, starting with an all-electric version of the 3 Series in late 2025. Up to 50% of BMW's worldwide sales are predicted to come from the Neue Klasse electric cars by 2030.

As well as supporting BEVs, the platform will also accommodate plug-in hybrids and hydrogen fuel cell engines. It will be made of aluminum and high-strength steel. According to BMW's research and development chief, Frank Weber, the Neue Klasse will power future vehicles extending from the 2 Series to the X7.

The first product to be built on the new platform will be the NK1, an electric car that will compete with BMW's future 3 Series. It will use BMW's sixth-generation electric drivetrain, which will include more efficient electric engines and 800V higher-density batteries with a range of roughly 435 miles (700 km) and 350kW charging capabilities.

NK1 will use sustainable materials and be lightweight, following the latest automobile design trends. It's also going to include the most up-to-date connection and infotainment systems. It will feature improved proportions, as well as a larger wheelbase, which will help maximize the interior's available space. After the i4, i5, and i7 electric cars, which will use the current CLAR architecture, the NK1 based on the Neue Klasse platform is slated to debut in 2025.
