Power And Efficiency: 2025 BMW M5 Goes Hybrid With 717 HP

BMW's 2025 M5 has more power than before, and the big news is that our beloved sedan has finally embraced electricity! This decision is not surprising, as an M5 hybrid was inevitable

To start with, the M5's 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 powertrain produces a whopping 717 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque.

Without an electric motor, the combustion engine produces a little less than the preceding car's 600 horsepower. The seventh-generation M5's ICE half offers 577 horsepower between 5,600 and 6,500 rpm and 553 lb-ft of torque at 1,800 rpm.

Although the engine is tuned differently, it shares the same S68 engine as the flagship XM super-SUV in the M-range. Both the XM and the new M5's drivetrains use an electric motor to add 194 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. Lifting Heavy Both the new M5 and the flagship XM are porky. Hybrid batteries and electric motors have made the M5 fatter.

The 2025 M5 weighs 5,390 lbs, up from 4,345 lbs. Between models, weight increased by 24%. Luxury performance cars like the M5 do become heavier over time. However, the 2017 F90 was lighter than the 2012 M5 F10 due to considerable weight-saving efforts to counteract the new powertrain. Despite 16 percent more power, the 2025 BMW M5 is slower to 60 mph due to its increased weight.

The record-setting F90-generation 617 HP M5 Competition reached 0–60 mph in 3.1 seconds, while the 627 HP M5 CS did it in 2.9 seconds. With the M Driver's package, top speed is still 155 mph or 190 mph. BMW states the M5 can drive 25 miles electric-only.

Speaking again of the engine, the high-revving V8 generates steady power through electrification. An eight-speed M Steptronic gearbox regulates it, and a new pre-gearing step between the electric motor's rotor and the automatic transmission's input shaft boosts its output from 207 to 332 lb-ft.

BMW also introduced "Boost Control." Just pull back and hold on the left paddle shifter to select all the car's aggressive settings. This offers rapid answers without the mental juggling of sports mode settings. AWD is permanent. The 2025 M5 has all-wheel drive like its predecessor. In the all-wheel drive system, the Active M Differential may distribute power between the left and rear wheels as well as assign torque to axles.

As expected, the M5 has undergone numerous meticulous modifications to enhance its performance. The M5 features model-specific engine and gearbox mounts, along with a fully modified suspension system. The front double-wishbone configuration has lighter aluminum components to minimize unsprung mass, as well as redesigned track, camber, and guide arms for the rear suspension system.

Now let's talk looks. The grille now has an enclosed gloss black appearance, with driver assistance systems in the middle. BMW may light up the grille surround and print the M5 model identifier on a horizontal bar. The M5's front wheels are 3 inches wider, and the rear ones are 1.9 inches bigger. The 2025 M5 boasts staggered width and circumference wheels, featuring a 20-inch front and a 21-inch rear.

Three wheel types are available with 285/40 ZR20 front and 295/35 ZR21 rear performance tires. Behind the wheels, there are dustbin-lid-sized braking discs. The front has six pistons, and the back has a floating single. In futile weight loss, carbon ceramic brakes save 55 lbs (1% of the car's curb weight). Additionally, the 2025 BMW M5 features gold-painted calipers.

The car's cooling system sends air to two remote radiators via vents behind the front wheel arches. An M spoiler and M twin black chrome tailpipes adorn the back. Also visible is a D-pilar with aerodynamic mirrors and an M5 emblem. The M Multifuction seats combine long-distance comfort with on-track assistance, according to reports. BMW's favorite interior upholstery color is the 2025 BMW Individual Full Merino Metallic leather package.

Inside, the leather features bi-colors of black/dark violet and taupe grey/deep lagoon pearl to create a striking impression. The vehicle boasts a new steering wheel design that comes with standard heating. Moreover, the sedan has M5-specific interior illumination, a Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System, a heads-up display, and a Sky Lounge Panoramic Roof. For lightweight roofing, opt for a carbon top to save 66 pounds.

Let's not forget about the BMW OS 8.5. This OS aims to eliminate physical buttons from automobile cabins, which we dislike. Meanwhile, the curved display's 12.3-inch information display and 14.9-inch control display feature M-specific graphical icons.

Next month at Goodwood, the 2025 BMW M5 will premiere globally. Production will begin at the Dingolfing factory in July. Pricing will start at $119,500 plus $1,175 destination and shipping, up 16% over the 2018 M5's $102,600 debut price.
