BMW X5 Li Debuts in China With X7-Like Longer Wheelbase

BMW X5 appears to be a popular choice for Chinese customers, but they also enjoy vehicles with extended wheelbases. To that end, the German carmaker has announced two longer versions of the X5 SAV, the xDrive30Li, and xDrive40L, both of which are made in China by BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. for China's market only.

In comparison to the conventional fourth-generation X5 released in 2018, BMW X5 Li has a 130 mm (5.1 inches) longer wheelbase. The X5 xDrive30Li and X5 xDrive40Li have a wheelbase of 3,105 mm (122.2 inches) and a length of 5,052 mm (198.9 inches). The first is similar to the BMW X7, albeit the flagship SUV is still the longest in the lineup, measuring 5,151 mm (202.8 inches).

According to BMW, the extra length has been employed to the convenience of the back passengers, who will have plenty of legroom. Also, the longer back doors provide simpler access to the cabin. The xDrive30Li, like the regular-wheelbase variants with the same titles, is equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 261 hp (195 kW / 265 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft), whereas the xDrive40Li is equipped with a more potent turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder motor that generates 329 hp (245 kW / 333 PS) and 450 Nm.

An eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission and BMW's xDrive AWD system send power to all four wheels in both circumstances. Electronically controlled dampers are included on the long-wheelbase X5s, whereas two-axle air suspension with automated self-leveling is available on the xDrive40Li.

BMW X5 Li versions, unlike the regular-wheelbase X5, will be made in the BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. Dadong facility in Shenyang, China, following a massive expansion of the facilities. This will allow the US plant to produce additional cars to meet rising demand, as well as begin production of the BMW XM by the end of 2022.

As part of the BMW Brilliance joint effort, BMW X5 Li xDrive30Li and X5 xDrive40Li will be sold in China starting in April 2022. Pricing has yet to be disclosed, however, it should be pricier than ordinary vehicles with similar drivetrains.
