BMW Made the X5 Bigger Than an X7 Where It Matters Most

Luxury SUVs have become as much about the passengers as the person behind the wheel, and BMW's latest China-exclusive X5 L reflects that shift. Unveiled less than a month after the standard X5, the stretched version arrives with a significantly longer wheelbase, extra rear-seat comfort, and technology developed specifically for Chinese buyers. An electric iX5 L joins it, sharing the same formula.

The biggest difference hides beneath the bodywork. BMW stretched the wheelbase by 5.1 inches, bringing it to 124.6 inches. That's even longer than the global BMW X7, giving rear passengers noticeably more legroom. From the outside, the changes stay subtle.

The new BMW X5 L gains unique wheel designs, fresh trim around the Hofmeister kink, extra light strips beside the kidney grille, and diagonal daytime running lights in place of the X-shaped units found on the global model. Inside, BMW raises the luxury level with redesigned seats, new color combinations, and a folding rear theater display capable of 8K video streaming and gaming.

The technology package also takes a different direction. Instead of using the driver-assistance system offered in other markets, the Chinese X5 L runs software developed by local tech company Momenta. The system relies on end-to-end AI trained specifically for Chinese roads and supports address-to-address assisted driving. BMW skipped LiDAR, a feature that has become common on many premium Chinese models, yet the company suggests this setup delivers an even more advanced driving experience.

BMW hasn't released full powertrain details yet, although it has confirmed one headline figure for the electric iX5 L. The SUV is expected to travel more than 621 miles on China's CLTC testing cycle. Real-world numbers will naturally be lower, but the message is clear. BMW clearly had rear-seat passengers in mind this time around.
