BMW Unveils Exciting Lineup at Munich: 530e PHEV and Full-Electric i5 Take Center Stage

While the Neue Klasse BMW Concept turned heads at IAA Mobility 2023, it wasn't the only star of the show. Making its global debut in Munich was the very first 5 Series, the 530e BMW plug-in hybrid, which shared the stage with the all-electric i5, set to hit the market in spring 2024.

The European G60 5 Series lineup differs slightly from its North American counterpart, with a strong focus on four-cylinder powertrains. However, the lone exception is the forthcoming 550e xDrive plug-in hybrid, the only six-cylinder option available. BMW's spotlight at the show, though, was on the entry-level PHEV, the rear-wheel-drive 530e.

BMW

While most press photos feature the brand new 5 Series donning an M package with a sporty appearance, the 530e arrives with a standard bodykit. As for the larger PHEVs, their exhaust pipes remain discreetly tucked under the bumper. The bodykit includes more slender but functional intakes, smaller alloy wheels, and vertical slits on the grille cover.

BMW

Powering the 530e is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, mated to a newly developed PHEV-specific electric motor, an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and a 19.4 kWh battery. Together, they produce approximately 300 HP and 330 lb-ft of torque, and the power is sent to the rear axle, a characteristic trait of traditional BMW sedans.

BMW

In terms of electric range, the larger battery capacity in comparison to the previous generation means an improved range of 54-63 miles between charges. A full recharge of the lithium-ion battery takes just 3 hours with a 7.4 kW rapid charger or approximately 9.8 hours via a standard domestic plug.

BMW

The second star of IAA Mobility 2023 is the i5 eDrive40 BMW. Overall, the vehicle boasts added features, bearing a strong resemblance to the iconic M60, except for the Hayon emblem. BMW has unveiled all the nuances of the $3,346 M Package, complete with 21-inch wheels from the BMW Individual catalog, costing $2,796.

BMW

The eDrive40 sports a fully electric powertrain, featuring a single rear-mounted electric motor, delivering 335 HP and 317 lb-ft of torque. The 82 kWh battery package offers an impressive WLTP range of 309-362 miles, surpassing the more powerful and all-wheel-drive-capable M60 model.

BMW

Now, the question arises: which of the EU-spec RWD 5 Series EV models would you choose? The 530e with its understated appearance and extended range or the emission-free i5 eDrive40? Keep in mind that the forthcoming M5 Performance flagship will also run on an electrified powertrain.
