BMW May Provide A Free V8 Engine Replacement

In 2014, BMW launched the N63 Customer Loyalty Offer and the N63 Customer Appreciation Program. These were generated by the N63 twin-turbo V8 engines, the first to be installed to a production automobile with a "hot vee" turbocharger arrangement, using too much oil.

There were several warnings and offers sent in the wake of this debacle, but the final result, according to what we've heard, is a class-action lawsuit against the carmaker. It's progressed a lot since then, with the clear lack of insulation from the hot turbos generating the high oil usage. BMW has proposed compensation for whatever reason, and it has gotten preliminary approval.

The case covers the 2013-2019 650i, the 2013-2019 750i and 750Li, the 2013-2017 550i, the 2014-2016 550i GT, the 20148-2018 X5, and the 2015-2019 X6 with the N63TU motor.

There was a previous case involving older vehicles equipped with the N63 motor, but it was solved. For each subsequent oil change at a dealership, the agreement provides two free quarts of oil for top-offs in between oil changes.

This offer is applicable for ten years or 120,000 miles from the day of in-service, whichever occurs first, but not less than one year after the settlement's effective date.

Clients would not be charged for excessive oil usage; instead, they will simply need to refill. If they have not yet encountered overconsumption, these clients are also eligible for up to three free oil consumption checks within the same period as above.

In some situations, however, the settlement offers the possibility of "changing the N63TU motors." According to Car Complaints, "BMW may execute one repair effort or give the client a motor replacement after the effective date of the motor lawsuit settlement and after one failed oil consumption assessment. If a car is fixed but fails the oil consumption test for the second time, the client will be given a motor replacement."

New motors have been altered to prevent the problem. The client will not be charged for a motor replacement if the car is still under warranty. However, many of these cars are too aged for their original warranties to cover them, and not everyone can afford to pay for an extension.
