Audi Unveils Electrified A5 And S5 With Dynamic New Design

The new A5 and S5 cars from Audi come with a variety of electrified drivetrains. The new A5/S5, which replaces the ICE-powered A4/S4 in both Sedan and Avant bodystyles, is different from the previous two-door Coupe and Cabriolet.

This change in strategy simplifies Audi's naming scheme, which uses even numbers for electric vehicles and odd numbers for gasoline cars. The new A5 Sedan, with five doors and a sensible tailgate, joins the A4 Sedan and Avant as models that replace the A5 Sportback.

With the introduction of the A5 designation came a more dynamic design language, defined by improved proportions and sharper detailing. The A4 was a discontinued model that prompted Audi to improve its design in response to complaints that it looked too similar to competitors like the BMW 3-Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

The expanded fenders give the A4 a more aggressive posture, the thinner grille frames more aggressive LED headlamps, and the bumper intakes are so large. Also, the taillights receive some snazzy OLEDs, which is a tech improvement. An upgraded version of the MLB Evo platform, the new PPC architecture is the first to ride on a production vehicle. The new Audi A5 is the first to do so.

A longer wheelbase of 114.2 inches distinguishes it from its predecessor. The result is an extra 2.7 inches of wheelbase clearance. Based on the expanded wheelbase, we may assume the total length and breadth to be greater, although we don't yet have detailed specifics. As for the interior, Audi is doing away with the A5's cluttered button layout in favor of a sleek, modern appearance.

The Audi MMI infotainment system's curving panoramic display merges an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster with a huge 14.5-inch touchscreen. Improved HUD technology and the 10.9-inch screen for the front passenger add a luxurious touch inside. Even more, Audi promised more interior room than previously.

An Advanced Gentle Hybrid Method While other luxury vehicles are jumping on the all-electric bandwagon, the A5 is sticking with a tried-and-true 2.0-liter turbocharged TFSI four-cylinder for now. However, a variable-geometry turbocharger and other adjustments to the combustion process give this workhorse a facelift that makes it more efficient. In Europe, you may choose between a front-wheel-drive model with 148 horsepower or a quattro model with 201 horsepower.

Some European and international markets offer a 2.0-liter TDI turbodiesel, upgraded with the new 48-Volt MHEV+ system, as an additional choice. To control pollutants, this oil burner makes use of a novel 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The electric motor provides an additional 24 horsepower, in addition to the regular engine's 201 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.

Faster acceleration and, naturally, greater gas mileage are the results. You may choose between front-wheel drive and Audi's renowned quattro all-wheel drive with the mild-hybrid TDI and a dual-clutch automatic gearbox. With its revised 3.0-liter V6 TFSI engine, the S5 takes things to the next level for excitement seekers.

This powerhouse, with 362 horsepower, is 13 horsepower more powerful than the previous S4 and S5 models, thanks to the MHEV plus mild-hybrid treatment. S tronic, an agile dual-clutch automatic gearbox, distributes the power to all four wheels, and Quattro Sport differential with torque vectoring gives you the confidence.

According to Audi, the revised suspension and steering arrangement lead to more precise and largely neutral handling. Meanwhile, the optional adjustable suspension supposedly offers a wider range from comfort to sportiness.

Later this month, European customers will be able to place orders for the all-new Audi A5 and S5 range, with first deliveries scheduled for November. Prices for the Audi A5 Sedan in Germany start at €45,200 ($49,279). For now, Audi didn't reveal details about the US-spec A5.
