Aston Martin is gearing up for a thrilling return to the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours race with a race-spec version of its extraordinary Valkyrie hypercar. This ambitious project aims to secure Aston Martin's first overall victory at the legendary French endurance race since 1959.

The Valkyrie LMH Project

This exciting endeavor comes after Aston Martin initially unveiled plans for a Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) variant of the Adrian Newey-designed Valkyrie hypercar in 2019. Although these plans were temporarily shelved, Autocar sources have now confirmed that the project is back on track.

The revived project is expected to be a collaborative effort between Aston Martin and Heart of Racing, a U.S.-based sports car racing team that currently competes in the GT class of sports car racing. The partnership could see Valkyrie LMH cars participating in both the FIA World Endurance Championship and the U.S.-based IMSA championship.

Aston Martin's Racing Ambitions

While Aston Martin has not officially confirmed the Valkyrie LMH project, the company did express enthusiasm for the growth of the Hypercar division at Le Mans. As a global hypercar brand, Aston Martin continues to closely monitor developments in this class.

The LMH rules grant manufacturers significant flexibility to create hybrid prototype racers, with Balance of Performance (BoP) regulations used to equalize their performance. Prominent automakers like Ferrari, Toyota, and Peugeot already produce cars that adhere to LMH rules.

A Dual Strategy

Aston Martin's commitment to a Le Mans return aligns with the company's broader motorsport ambitions. Chairman Lawrence Stroll, who is passionate about racing, expressed the desire to expand beyond Formula 1 and GT racing. The company's continued participation in GT3 and GT4 racing programs, along with its victory in the GTE Pro class at Le Mans two years ago, underscores its commitment to motorsport.

The development of Aston Martin Performance Technologies, in conjunction with the F1 team, signals a deeper involvement in mid-engined vehicle development. Furthermore, discussions are underway to finalize the return to Le Mans, although specific details and timelines are yet to be disclosed.

Aston Martin's history at Le Mans is rich and storied, including numerous class victories. However, the company has only secured a single overall victory in 1959 when Roy Salvadori and Carroll Shelby piloted a DBR1 to triumph. The upcoming Valkyrie LMH project aims to add another glorious chapter to Aston Martin's Le Mans legacy.
