Another Mercedes-AMG SL Engine Is On The Way

The new Mercedes-AMG SL has been unveiled, and it's an absolute stunner. The new roadster, which comes in two variants depending on the region, is a throwback to the iconic nameplate's beginnings. For those who are unfamiliar with the abbreviation SL, it stands for Sport-Leicht (Sport Lightweight).

Currently, only one engine with two output levels is available: a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with 469 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, or 577 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. Now, all of that is going to alter.

The Mercedes-Benz Passion Blog reports that a new 43 trim will be added to the range soon. It'll reportedly come with a plug-in hybrid powertrain that includes the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine found in the C-Class. That engine alone generates 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The electric aid will boost output while also lowering fuel consumption.

According to the source, the new trim would have round twin tailpipes to distinguish it from the two more powerful models. The total output is expected to be roughly 385 hp, plus an additional 20 hp from the generator, according to sources. In terms of output and pricing, the new Mercedes-AMG SL 43 will remain solidly below the 53. 

Mercedes is rapidly heading toward electrification, so an electric version of the SL makes perfect sense. Bringing electrification to existing vehicles is just one of the various ways the automaker can assist reduce its overall corporate fuel economy standards in the United States and overseas. Mercedes-AMG SL 43 is yet to be given a release date.
