AC Cobra GT Roadster Is A Modern Twist On The Classic Shelby Cobra

In the 1960s, the AC-Shelby Cobra was an extremely valuable and uncommon find, selling for more than $1 million.  Fortunately, knockoffs are now on the market, promising a more affordable version with the same legendary good looks and an exciting ride.

One example is AC Cars, which is shaking things up with its latest offering—the AC Cobra GT Roadster.

Although the exterior design draws inspiration from the 1960s big-block 427 Cobras, the GT Roadster boasts a significantly different and more sophisticated setup beneath the surface. The GT Roadster adopts a brand-new aluminum platform that AC Cars describes as "future-proof," replacing the original's steel ladder chassis.

AC Cars notes that the previous chassis had reached its limits in terms of safety and performance. David Conza, the newly appointed CEO and major investor, played a pivotal role in driving this update. The carbon-skinned GT is longer than AC's Cobra MK VI and features a wider track and wheelbase, offering more interior space.

The GT Roadster comes with the option of a 10-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters or a six-speed manual unit. Engine choices include a Ford 5.0-liter Coyote V8 producing 454 bhp and 420 lb-ft, or a supercharged version of the same engine capable of reaching up to 654 bhp and 575 lb-ft.

AC Cars plans to manufacture 250 GTs annually for global markets, and the first year's allocation is already sold out at a price of £285,000 ($359,000) each. CEO David Conza emphasizes that the AC Cobra GT Roadster aims to deliver an experience reminiscent of the original AC Cobra but with an unparalleled level of sophistication, breaking new ground for high-performance sports cars in the 2020s and beyond.
