A New Chapter In Off-Roading: The Mercedes G580 EQ Unveiled

The G-class battering ram, a first for the automaker, is an electric take on the legendary off-roader and the first electric vehicle to use Mercedes' new naming scheme. With a total of 859 lb-ft of torque, the G-electric vehicle can accelerate from 62 mph in 4.7 seconds, thanks to its four-motor electric powertrain that produces 579 horsepower.

Each motor contributes 145 horsepower. But according to Mercedes, the G580 EQ's off-road performance was the main focus, so it can beat the old G-class with its internal combustion engine when the going gets tough.

The powertrain of the G580 is capable of handling challenging conditions without the need for conventional diff locks, thanks to its four motors' independent two-speed gearboxes, shiftable low-ratio transmission, and unique motor management. With its completely sealed battery and powertrain components, the G can wade through 33.5 inches of water, which is 5.9 inches more than the ICE-powered G-class can manage.

Its traction is so good that it can traverse a 35-degree slope. For off-roading, you can use features like G-Turn—the Mercedes name for a tank-turn—to make the G580 spin around in place; G-Steering to dramatically narrow the turning circle by pivoting the G around one wheel; and crawl mode to go under walking pace on extremely rough terrain.

A sleeker front, a reshaped hood for better ventilation, and the ability to transform the spare tire rack on the back of the vehicle into a charging port are among other noticeable modifications. The G580 has an electric vehicle range of 292 WLTP miles and is capable of handling charge rates of 200 kW. Considering the enormous 6,800 lbs curb weight, an increase of 1,323 lbs over the previous G500, and the barn-door-like aerodynamics (which have decreased from 0.48 to 0.44 Cd), that's not bad at all.

Keyless entry, heated cupholders, Burmester 3D surround sound hifi, and a transparent hood camera system are optional features that will cost you more money than the G580 EQ's ambient lighting and Mercedes' newest MBUX infotainment system. In Germany, the basic trim costs €142,622 ($152,620), and we will announce specific pricing for the US later. This places it between the G500 and G63, which are powered by internal combustion engine engines.

You may upgrade your G with 20-inch AMG wheels, running boards, stainless steel accents, and a flat-bottom sports steering wheel by selecting the AMG-Line trim. Alternatively, you can have your G customized via Merc's Manufaktur program. On the other hand, the Edition One launch model is an option worth considering. There are only five exclusive Manufaktur paint finishes available, and this particular one you see here costs a whopping €192,524 (or $206,018 or £165,440).
