It seems like the upcoming transformation of the Jeep Wrangler marks a significant departure from its traditional roots. The next-generation model, slated for production in 2028, embraces a future where electric and range-extender powertrains take center stage.

The latest agreement between Stellantis and the UAW provides a sneak peek into the fate of Jeep's US-built models, especially the Wrangler. While the current generation already features a plug-in hybrid variant, the 4xe, set for powertrain upgrades in 2025, the real paradigm shift comes in 2028.

The forthcoming J70-generation Wrangler is poised to redefine the iconic off-roader with electric and "Range Electric Paradigm Breaker" powertrains, marking a departure from the combustion engine era. This evolution aligns with Stellantis's commitment to electric mobility, introducing a body-on-frame platform, the STLA Frame, designed for heavy-duty applications.

The Ram 1500 REV, scheduled for 2025, will be the first to implement the 'Range Electric Paradigm Breaker' system, showcasing its prowess in payload and towing capabilities, surpassing competitors like the Ford F-150 Lightning. The STLA Frame platform, known for its adaptability to accommodate substantial batteries, promises extended ranges with options ranging from 168 kWh to 229 kWh.

Jeep enthusiasts got a taste of the brand's electric ambitions through the Magneto 3.0 concept, hinting at the power and performance expected from the electric Wrangler. Before the much-anticipated electric Wrangler takes the off-road stage, Jeep plans to introduce the Recon, an electric SUV boasting comparable off-road capabilities.

Positioned as a rugged and boxy alternative, the Recon will coexist with the Wrangler while offering a unique and distinctive option, according to Jeep's European boss, Antonella Bruno. As the automotive landscape undergoes a monumental shift towards electrification, the Jeep Wrangler, an icon of adventure, is gearing up for a groundbreaking chapter that embraces the electric future without compromising its legendary capabilities.
