Toyota Just Built the Most Powerful Land Cruiser Ever – And It’s a Hybrid

Japan is finally getting the updated 2027 Toyota Land Cruiser 300, and the biggest change is under the hood. The gasoline V6 is reportedly being replaced by a 457-hp hybrid, while Toyota adds a new entry-level diesel trim and more standard equipment.

The Land Cruiser 300 arrived in 2021 and received smaller technology updates in 2025. The latest version has already reached markets including the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Australia, with Japan reportedly scheduled for September 16.

The new  Toyota Land Cruiser 300 i-Force Max hybrid pairs a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 with an electric motor integrated into the 10-speed automatic transmission. Combined output is 457 hp and 583 lb-ft, making it the most powerful Land Cruiser so far.

The battery sits beneath the cargo area, reducing fuel tank capacity from 80 to 68 liters. It also adds 375 lbs compared with the outgoing gasoline V6. Toyota has waterproofed the pack, allowing the SUV to retain its 27.6-inch water-wading depth.

Japan will offer the hybrid in ZX and GR Sport trims. The ZX gets revised bumper openings and 20-inch wheels, while the GR Sport keeps its rugged bodywork, matte gray 18-inch wheels, dual differential locks, and E-KDSS suspension.

Both hybrid versions come with seven seats, a 12.3-inch digital cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, a head-up display, JBL audio, heated and ventilated seats, and a 100V/1,500W power outlet. Electric power steering is also standard, while Toyota Safety Sense adds Proactive Driving Assist.

The diesel range continues with the twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6, producing 304 hp and 516 lb-ft. A new five-seat GX becomes the entry point, with fabric upholstery, a 7-inch digital cluster, an 8-inch infotainment screen, six speakers, and 18-inch wheels.

Diesel ZX and GR Sport models remain available, both with five seats. The diesel ZX keeps the current front-end design, with the revised styling reserved for the hybrid models.

Leaked pricing reportedly starts at ¥6,300,800 ($39,500) for the GX Diesel and reaches ¥9,150,900 ($57,300) for the diesel GR Sport. The hybrid ZX is expected to cost ¥9,801,000 ($61,400), while the hybrid GR Sport tops the range at ¥10,200,300 ($63,900).

The updated Land Cruiser 300 reaches Japan with more power, a broader lineup, and a much more expensive hybrid option. Whether buyers will consider the extra cost worthwhile should become clear once sales begin.
