The MG4 hasn’t been around long, but that hasn’t stopped MG from moving fast. Just three years after the electric hatchback first launched, it’s already getting a second-generation refresh in China, and this time, it’s a big one.

The new 2025 MG4 arrives with a fresh design inside and out, a brand-new platform, and most notably, a semi-solid-state battery option. Prices start at just 73,800 yuan, or around $10,300, which makes this one of the most affordable next-gen EVs you can buy.

Now, let’s talk about that battery. This is where things get interesting. MG is offering a semi-solid-state unit developed by QingTao Energy, making the MG4 the first mass-market EV to feature a battery of this kind. It’s not quite a true solid-state pack (it still uses a bit of liquid electrolyte), but with only 5 percent liquid content, it’s already ahead of what you’ll find in cars like the Nio ET5 or the IM L6 Max Lightyear.

This cutting-edge 70 kWh battery is said to deliver up to 334 miles of range. MG hasn’t announced pricing for this version yet, but it won’t come standard. Instead, most buyers will choose from more familiar packs: a 42.8 kWh unit with up to 271 miles of range or a 53.9 kWh option that delivers up to 329 miles.

At the entry level, the MG4 “Comfort” trim starts at 73,800 yuan (~$10,300). Step up to the “Ease” trim for around $11,400, or go all-in with the “Freedom” model at $12,600. The 53.9 kWh version starts at $14,700 under the “Smart” trim name.

Design-wise, the second-gen 2025 MG4 tones things down with a smoother, more rounded look. Inside, you’ll find a much more upmarket cabin: a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, a digital instrument cluster, heated and ventilated seats, a wireless phone charger, and a panoramic glass roof with an electric sunshade. There’s even a heated steering wheel and reclining rear seats for added comfort.

Pre-sales have just opened in China, and while it’s not clear when or if this version will reach international markets, it’s already making waves at home.
