Good news for BMW enthusiasts! The 2025 Z4 M40i marks a turning point as BMW reintroduces the manual gearbox, available worldwide from March 2024, including North America. Dubbed the “Handschalter” package, this six-speed stick shift option comes with more than just a change in gears.

Owners opting for the manual delight in unique elements like different suspension settings, wheels, paint colors, and interior trims.

While the manual transmission adds a bit of nostalgia, it does come with a slight trade-off in acceleration. Clocking 60 mph in 4.2 seconds compared to the 3.9 seconds of the eight-speed automatic, the manual showcases a more deliberate pace. The 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six engine produces 382 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, keeping the top speed at 155 mph.

BMW emphasizes the tailored engineering of this manual transmission for the 2025 Z4 M40i, promising the "mechanical feel for which BMW manuals have been praised." Priced at an additional $3,500, the manual option is exclusive to the six-cylinder M40i, leaving the entry-level Z4 sDrive30i as an auto-only offering in North America.

Opting for the manual transmission also brings a host of enhancements. Unique chassis tuning includes model-specific programming for traction control and differential, specialized auxiliary springs, a reinforced anti-roll bar clamp, and reconfigured damper and sport steering settings. Visual and performance upgrades accompany the manual choice, including staggered-sized 19-inch front and 20-inch rear bi-color M-light alloy rims.

The package offers exclusive metallic paint options like San Remo Green and Frozen Deep Green, with the latter at a $2,950 premium. Red brake calipers and extended Shadowline accents in high-gloss black add to the visual appeal. Beyond the exterior, the manual package extends to the interior, allowing owners to upgrade from synthetic Sensatec leather to genuine Vernasca cowhide at no extra cost.

With five shades to choose from and an Alcantara and leather option, the 2025 BMW Z4 M40i with the Handschalter promises a personalized and engaging driving experience.
