Renault has introduced the 2024 Grand Kangoo, an extended 7-seater variant of the third-generation Kangoo minivan, catering to those who prioritize spaciousness and versatility. This versatile minivan made its debut at the IAA Mobility 2023 event in Munich, showcasing an array of powertrain options including petrol, diesel, and an all-electric variant.

Competition within the LCV-based minivan segment is intensifying, with rivals like Citroen Berlingo, Peugeot Partner, Opel Combo Life, and Toyota Proace City already offering long-wheelbase alternatives. In response, Renault has expanded its lineup to include the Grand Kangoo, providing a roomier alternative to the standard version.

Although Renault has not officially disclosed the dimensions of the Grand Kangoo, it is anticipated to measure approximately 4,910 mm (193.3 inches) in length, with a wheelbase of 3,100 mm (122.0 inches), based on its closely-related Kangoo L2 Van. This makes it 424 mm (16.7 inches) longer than the standard Kangoo, with an additional 384 mm (15.1 inches) of space between the front and rear axles.

Benefiting from its elongated body, the Grand Kangoo offers seating for seven adults and still retains 500 liters (17.7 cubic feet) of cargo space. The rear seats are not only adjustable but also foldable, retractable, and removable. This versatility allows for an expansive 3,750 liters (132.4 cubic feet) of cargo space, essentially transforming the Grand Kangoo into a commercial vehicle. By folding the front passenger seat, you can accommodate items with a length of up to 3.11 meters (122.4 inches). Additionally, the interior boasts 58 liters (2 cubic feet) of in-cabin storage, including a sliding drawer and underfloor compartments in the second row.

Renault has also focused on improving the rear passenger experience, boasting class-leading knee room in the third row (164 mm or 6.5 inches) with easier access thanks to longer sliding doors measuring 83 cm (32.7 inches), an increase of 18 cm (7.1 inches) over the Kangoo's doors. The Grand Kangoo offers both standard and glazed tailgate options. For families with infants or child care professionals, the Grand Kangoo includes five seats with Isofix points.

The Power

The 2024 Grand Kangoo presents a range of powertrain options. Euro 6E-compliant combustion engines include a 1.3-liter petrol engine producing 128 hp (96 kW / 130 PS), available with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed EDC automatic transmission. The 1.5-liter diesel engine delivers 95 hp (71 kW / 96 PS) and is exclusively paired with a 6-speed manual.

However, the spotlight shines on the Grand Kangoo E-Tech, an all-electric variant powered by a single electric motor generating up to 120 hp (90 kW / 122 PS) and 245 Nm (181 lb-ft) of torque. Utilizing the Eco driving mode, power is limited to 75 hp (56 kW / 76 PS), prioritizing range. The 45 kWh lithium-ion battery provides a WLTP range of 265 km (165 miles). Equipped with an 80 kW DC charger, the Grand Kangoo can replenish 80 km (50 miles) of range in just 10 minutes. Renault offers an 8-year or 160,000 km battery warranty, with a commitment to replace it for free if the battery's State Of Health (SoH) falls below 70%.

Trim Levels and Interior

Renault offers three trim levels for the Grand Kangoo: Authentic, Equilibre, and Techno. While much of the exterior design remains consistent with the standard Kangoo (excluding the rear doors and extended wheelbase), the dashboard has been retained. Available accents in brushed dark wood aim to conceal its LCV origins, complemented by an optional 10-inch digital instrument cluster and a freestanding infotainment display. A total of 14 ADAS systems provide Level 2 autonomous capability to the Grand Kangoo.

Signed by the French

Production of the new Grand Kangoo will take place at the Maubeuge factory in Northern France, alongside the standard Kangoo, mechanically-related vans from Nissan and Mercedes-Benz, and the forthcoming Renault 4. The electric motor and chargers for the Kangoo E-Tech will be supplied from the Cleon plant in Normandy.

2024 Renault Grand Kangoo

Order books for the Renault Grand Kangoo are set to open towards the end of 2023, with initial deliveries expected in early 2024. While pricing details have yet to be revealed, it's anticipated that the Grand Kangoo will come at a premium compared to the standard Kangoo. Since its original launch in 1997, Renault has sold a total of 4.4 million Kangoo units across 50 countries.
