2023 Mercedes-AMG SL43 Uses An Electric Turbocharged Four-Cylinder Engine

With the release of the 2023 Mercedes-AMG SL43, Mercedes is returning the four-cylinder in its top roadster range. The SL43 takes its position as the entry model of the 2+2 roadster line, after the debut of a pair of bi-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8s in the SL 55 4Matic+ and SL63 4Matic+ last year, providing 470 horsepower and 577 horsepower correspondingly in the R232-codenamed SL.

Providing power to the entry-level  SL is a new version of AMG's 2.0-liter four-cylinder M139 motor with an electric exhaust gas turbocharger, an innovation borrowed from Formula 1 racing vehicles that Mercedes says is a first for a production model.

The 2.0-liter engine in the SL 43 generates 375 horsepower at 6,750 rpm and 354 pound-feet of peak torque between 3,250 and 5,000 rpm, with a short-term bump of 13 horsepower from the belt-driven starter generator (RSG) in particular driving scenarios. The rear wheels are exclusively driven by AMG's 9-speed MCT automatic gearbox, which claims a 62 mph sprint time of 4.9 seconds and a peak speed of 171 mph. 

AMG's fabric-top roadster comes equipped with an AMG RIDE CONTROL steel chassis and an AMG DYNAMIC SELECT technology with 5 driving styles, or 6 with the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package, which adds Race to the standard Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport +, and Individual. The SL 43 comes standard with smaller 19-inch wheels, but wider 20- or 21-inch wheels are optional in the eight-cylinder variants.
