2022 Mercedes-AMG SL Roadster: A First Look Inside

The inside of the next-generation Mercedes-AMG SL roadster has a 2+2 seating layout for the first time since the R107 in 1971. Technically, the R129 in 1989 was the last to provide two back seats, but they were nearly impractical.

The all-new AMG SL, which will replace the AMG GT Roadster later this summer, is only the sixth generation of the 67-year-old model series.

The first official pictures of the interior of the new 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL Roadster reveal a tech- and a feature-packed cabin that takes design cues from the outgoing roadster as well as the newer S-Class and AMG GT and GT 4-Door Coupe versions. Mercedes argues that its designers used ideas from the original 300 SL Roadster from the 1950s to produce a “mix of analog geometry and a digital environment – termed hyperanalog,” however there are few noticeable connections.

It appears to be a plush space to sit in, with a simple layout dominated by massive screens, including a fully digital 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster and an 11.9-inch touchscreen that runs the latest MBUX infotainment system and is integrated into the center console, as with every other new Mercedes these days. Of course, both displays may be customized, and Mercedes claims that their design reduces sunlight reflections. If all of that sounds a little too distracting, a 3D head-up display is available as an alternative.

The aviation-inspired, four galvanized "turbine nozzle" fans stand out for some, whereas other highlights from Mercedes' introduction include high-quality Burmester speakers with actual metal frames and door panels.

Naturally, once the car is available for purchase, buyers will have a wide range of customization options, including single or two-tone Nappa Leather, Nappa Style Leather with diamond stitching, or a combination of Nappa Leather with DINAMICA RACE microfiber and contrasting yellow or red top-stitching for the sport or AMG Performance Seats.

The new 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL Roadsterwill be developed on a revolutionary chassis that combines aluminum, steel, magnesium, and carbon fiber composites to keep the weight under 600 lbs. Mercedes claims the redesigned body is 50% more solid across its width and 40% stronger across its length than the AMG GT Roadster, leading to better and more accurate control and performance.

It will feature a retractable soft-top and be available for the first time with Mercedes-AMG Benz's 4MATIC+ AWD system. In terms of powertrains, we're expected to see a small number of hybridized in-line six-cylinder and V8 gasoline engines mated to automatic transmissions, with the flagship model perhaps producing over 800-hp.
