2022 Jeep Commander Overland Will Appear As A Seven-Seat SUV

To different people, Jeep Commander has various meanings. It's the midsize SUV (codenamed XK) that was sold in the United States until 2010, whereas Europeans and others are familiar with the XH internal designation and V6 diesel motor. In China, it’s the name of a pair of SUVs (Commander/Grand Commander) that debuted in 2018 as an obey to the Yuntu prototype.

In August 2021, a new Commander has arrived in town. It's more or less a seven-seat variant of the recently redesigned 2022 Compass, and it's meant for Latin America. After an extended teaser campaign, Jeep's parent company Stellantis has recently announced the Brazilian model, and we're talking about the top-of-the-line 2022 Jeep Commander Overland version.

Jeep has taken the opportunity to give the larger 2022 Commander its own character, as evidenced by the external design, which demonstrates it's more than simply an extended Compass. Redesigned headlamps with a flatter appearance flank the iconic seven-slot grille.

These are accompanied by an LED light bar in the redesigned bumper that serves as the daytime running lights and sits just above the fog lights. The SUV's front fascia is redecorated with metallic touches.

The Commander's greater footprint is reflected in the side profile, which exposes a substantially larger greenhouse with a larger quarter glass. As seen by our latest spy pictures, the metallic strip running over the side of the car before falling at the rear pillar seems quite close to what the two-row 2022 Grand Cherokee will also have.

When it comes to the rear, the 2022 Commander differs significantly from the Compass in that it has thinner taillights set higher up. The tailgate appears to be much wider and conceals the door handle. The "TD" and "4x4" badges indicate that this is a vehicle with a turbodiesel motor that sends power to both ends.

If you're accustomed to the 2022 Compass, the interior should feel similar, although Jeep hasn't revealed any technical details yet. The 2.0-liter will produce around 200-hp using a nine-speed automated gearbox. In particular, a newly built 1.3-liter turbocharged gasoline motor with flex-fuel compatibility should produce 185-hp and 270 Nm (200 lb-ft) of torque when paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and optional 4x4.
